Each year, local residents of the complex take the statue of the Virgin from their chapel to a small beach in the fishing port. Once on the beach, fishermen place the statue aboard a decorated boat and the statue navigates along the coast. Since 1921, the statue of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen, has been transported with great fanfare annually as part of the July Festivities to the pier of Puerto de la Cruz where, at the end of its procession, it is hoisted on board a set ship. If the weather permits, the boat that carries the statue, accompanied by a flotilla of other boats, makes a short trip along the coast of the island before returning to the port.
